Information on Growing the Cacao Plant

Being able to grow the cacao plant in your own yard would be wonderful if you like chocolate.  That is because this plant is used to make chocolate.  It is possible to grow this plant in your own yard or garden as long as you can supply it with the proper conditions that it needs to grow. You may actually need to have a greenhouse for it to grow properly.  However, if you have one, you would be in great shape.  This article is going to explore how to grow it properly so that it will mature and you can use it.

You will need to start by removing the casing from the seed.  If you are having difficulty doing this, you may want to place the seed into a bag with a piece of bread for a day or two.  Once the casing begins to soften, you will want to rub it off gently with some sand or another harsh material.

You are going to need to keep the seed well watered. However, you do not want it to be saturated.  You are also going to need to water it early in the morning.  Add fertilizer as needed and be sure to add a pesticide if you notice that it is getting bugs and such that you need to get rid of.  Once your seed has started to grow into a plant you will want to consider replanting it somewhere so that it can grow and mature the way you want it to.

You will need to begin by selecting the perfect location in your yard.  You are going to need a place that is going to get a lot of shade.  Dig a hole that is at least 13 square feet.  You will want to add some organic material and fertilizer to the area.  This is really all you need to do to the soil. You simply want to be sure that the cacao plant has enough nutrition to grow.

You are going to need to consistently prune your cacao plant.  You will wait until the first branch is at least five feet high.  Each time there after you will want to let five or six branches grow out on the tree.  You will then need to determine which ones are the strongest.  Once you have made this determination, you will want to leave the strongest two or three branches and cut the rest of them off.

As you watch your cacao plant and the pods that are forming on it, you will want to keep an eye on the color of the pods.  About five months after the plant begins to set, you are going to notice that the pods are lightening in color.  If you take your finger and tap on the pod you are going to hear a hallow sound.  At this point, you will want to take a knife and cut the pod away from the tree.  You will need a very heavy object to get the cacao seed out of the pod.

Growing a cacao plant for yourself is not very difficult at all as long as you understand how to prune it and you can give it the heat and humidity that it needs to grow and thrive.  It may be difficult to find this plant in your region.  Therefore, you are going to want to search online to see if you can find one to purchase.  You will also want to be sure that the plant will grow where you live.  Many nurseries that sell this plant are going to be able to tell you if it will grow where you live.  Always check this before you buy the plant.
