All You Need to Know about Drying Apricots

Drying apricots is something that many people enjoy doing because it gives them the opportunity to enjoy the apricots throughout the year.  You can consider completing this task if you want to be able to store them in the off season.  They have a lot of vitamins and minerals that make them a great snack and when they are in the dried form they are a lot more enjoyable because you know the hard work that went into preparing them.  This article is going to explain how to go about drying apricots so that you can do this on your own in the future.

You are going to start by select the apricots.  You want to select apricots that are firm and deep orange.  You are then going to need to wash them and then take the time to remove any bad spots that they may have.  You will then need to cut them in half and remove the pit from the center of the fruit.  Once you have done this, you are going to need to press the skin of the apricot inward and press the fruit side out.  This is very important for the drying process.

The next step in drying apricots is taking the time to dip them. You are going to need to prepare one fourth of a cup of lemon or lime juice along with one cup of water. You will mix those together and then take your apricot slices and place them in the water. Let them sit for approximately five minutes.  This is going to help keep them from becoming brown before they are dried and it is very important to make sure you complete this step.

Now they are ready.  You are going to need to determine how you want to dry the.  You can place them in the sun to dry, you can place them in the oven or you can use a food dehydrator.  For this article we are going to discuss using your oven for drying apricots.  You are going to need to set the oven for 135 degrees.  You will spread the fruit out on a cookie sheet and make sure that they are not touching each other.  You will then place them into the preheated oven and let them dry out.  You do not want them to be crispy when you remove them.  This means that they are too dry.  You are going to need to watch them.  You want them to be pliable.  However, if you have created crispy apricots, you may want to consider making apricot powder.  You can use this in the kitchen as a seasoning.

When you are finished drying apricots you are going to want to determine how you should store them.  You could place them into an air tight container or a canning jar in order to store them.  However, you could also use a vacuum sealer as a way to store them as well.  It is up to you how you decide to store them.  You are going to have a better understanding for how often you are going to use the apricots and you are going to know which storing method is going to work the best for you.

Drying apricots is not something that is going to take a lot of time or energy if you think about it.  They are easy to dry as long as you remember to dip them before you begin.  You also need to take the time to watch them while they are drying so that they are not overly dry.  If you are using a dehydrating machine, you will probably find directions on the amount of time required to dehydrate them.  This is going to help ensure that they are perfect every time.
